About the World Seed Program
The World Seed Program of the New Forests Project was established in 1982 to bring training materials, educational assistance and high quality tree seeds to small-scale reforestation efforts around the developing world. Through this effort, the New Forests Project has sent educational materials and more than two million seeds of agroforestry species per year to over 4,400 reforestation projects in more than 120 countries. Other support has included, promoting networking among its beneficiaries and providing small irrigation equipment.
More recently, the program has expanded its efforts and modified its seed distribution mechanism. The program is now partnering with organizations in developing world countries working on reforestation and sending them larger quantities of seeds directly from its seeds suppliers in India. These organizations then re-distribute the seed locally and provide technical support to local people. Additionally, the World Seed Program is now providing small grants to support training in reforestation and purchase of equipment.
