The World Tree Program (previously called World Seed Program) of the New Forests Project was established in 1982 to support efforts in developing countries that restore degraded lands and protect natural resources. Since its creation the program has been promoting reforestation and agroforestry practices among rural farmers and local organizations in poor nations. Support has included providing training materials, educational assistance, networking, high quality tree seeds and irrigation equipment to local reforestation efforts around the developing world. Through this effort, the New Forests Project has mailed an average of 7.5 million seeds of agroforestry tree species per year to over 4,400 reforestation projects in more than 120 countries. More recently, the program has expanded to provide small grants for training and the purchase of equipment, promote the implementation of local seed orchards to reduce dependence on shipments from abroad and expand financial support to specific countries. The seed shipment method has was also changed in 2009 and includes larger shipments that then are re-distributed locally.
